Palate

There are fresh notes of dark
cherry, forest floor and boysenberry, bolstered by mulberry,
candied violets and blueberry.
RESONANT and focused, lush and powerful, this
gleaming wine is delicious now and will gain
expressiveness and depth for YEARS to come.

Growing Conditions

In transforming our estate-grown grapes to Ovid wine, we take meticulous care in every step, blending classical and modern methods in farming and winemaking. Planted in 2000, our 15 acre organically farmed and CCOF-certified vineyard is divided into one acre blocks, each with a different rootstock and clone combination of Bordeaux varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot.

Each year, from small lots of fruit grown in the red rocky soil of our vineyard on Pritchard Hill, we choose just the best barrels and blend them together to create the new vintage of Ovid Napa Valley. Ovid is a blend of the four Bordeaux varietals grown here: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot, varying in proportion from year to year but always eloquently conveying this special place.

In 2012 on our little piece of Pritchard Hill, budbreak began
in the second week of April – roughly a week early. Long and
temperate days meted out the growing season to follow, making it
a vintage with a sense of l uxury. There was TIME to study the
vineyard, time to CONSIDER each small and meaningful
farming decision, and time to focus on each section individually
to elicit the BEST FRUIT, row by row, vine by vine.

In CRAFTING the 2012 Ovid Napa Valley wine, we had a wealth of
wonderful lots from which to choose. The resulting 2012 OVID blend
evokes this generous vintage with layer upon layer of rich flavors.
