Palate

Sweet, firm tannins are interleaved with blackberry and dark cherry fruits, espresso, spice and licorice to make a wine that is both uncommonlly delectable and undeniably eloquent. Cellar for at least one year after receipt, and decant for 3 hours when young. This wine will age beautifully for at least 25 years.

Growing Conditions

In transforming our estate-grown grapes to Ovid wine, we take meticulous care in every step, blending classical and modern methods in farming and winemaking. Planted in 2000, our 15 acre organically farmed and CCOF-certified vineyard is divided into one acre blocks, each with a different rootstock and clone combination of Bordeaux varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot.

Each year, from small lots of fruit grown in the red rocky soil of our vineyard on Pritchard Hill, we choose just the best barrels and blend them together to create the new vintage of Ovid Napa Valley. Ovid is a blend of the four Bordeaux varietals grown here: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot, varying in proportion from year to year but always eloquently conveying this special place.

2013 was an epic year in Napa Valley, and the 2013 Ovid Napa Valley is already finding its voice and recounting its story. The wine's great intensity and profound flavors come from a season of striving and struggle that began with a dry and early spring in the second year of California's drought and continued throughout the long growing season.
