Nose

Rich scent of blackberries, accented by a slight hint of pepper.

Palate

The lushness of blackberries and currants carries over to the palate, which enters with a rustic, earthy character. Subtle notes of vanilla are laced perfectly with the fruit, reflecting this wine’s balanced oak quality. Tannins are smooth and silky, displaying the fine characteristics of Napa Valley dust.

Growing Conditions

The Butala site in St. Helena, California, produces exceptional wine due to soil, vine age and old style “head pruning,” no trellis wires – just old gnarly vines supported on their own. Our other “key site” is Mead Ranch, a red soil located high in the mountains of Atlas Peak. This site also produces exceptional quality. These vines are also head pruned and the great percentage are over 30 years of age.

Aging

Historically our Zinfandel is showing all the bells and whistles at 2-3 years from vintage date - although enjoyable at release or after aging a decade or more.

Appearance

A bright plum hue.

Food Pairing

Pasta with tomato-based sauce, spicy Sicilian sausage, pizza, BBQ and red meats.
