A brief history

Starting out with a humble plan and uncharted future, Chuck Wagner and his late parents, Charlie and Lorna, founded Caymus Vineyards in 1972. They were a family of farmers with deep roots in the Napa Valley – in 1857, Chuck’s great-great grandfather captained a wagon train to California from Bible Grove, Missouri. The mother-father-son trio spent many wonderful years working side-by-side, establishing the family’s work ethic, appetite for innovation, down-to-earth sensibility, and deep appreciation of enjoying good food and wine with family and friends.

Today, Caymus Cabernet is one of Napa Valley’s most celebrated wines. Made from grapes farmed in 8 of Napa Valley’s 16 appellations, the wine has a signature style that is dark in color, with rich fruit and ripe tannins – as approachable in youth as it is in maturity. Chuck Wagner continues to make two world-renowned Cabernet Sauvignons, Caymus Napa Valley and Caymus Special Selection. Special Selection is the only wine in the world to be honored twice as Wine Spectator magazine’s “Wine of the Year.”

Several years ago, Chuck introduced Caymus-Suisun Grand Durif from Suisun Valley, a largely undiscovered and remarkable wine region only 30 minutes southeast of Napa. “Durif” is synonymous with Petite Sirah, and we added “Grand” to the name because this wine is anything but petite – it is dark, luxurious, soft and supple.

Two of Chuck’s children, Charlie and Jenny Wagner, now work alongside him, and the family offers a range of wines sourced from premier winegrowing regions of California and beyond. For more information, go to wagnerfamilyofwine.com.

Meet The Team

  • Chuck Wagner

Chuck Wagner was born into a family of farmers and winemakers with deep roots in Napa Valley. In 1857, his great-great grandfather captained a wagon train to California from Bible Grove, Missouri. Chuck was just 19 when he started Caymus Vineyards with his parents, Charlie and Lorna Wagner, and they spent many wonderful years working side-by-side. Chuck continues to make two renowned Cabernet Sauvignons, Caymus Napa Valley and Caymus Special Selection.

Chuck also produces Caymus-Suisun Grand Durif from Suisun Valley, a “hidden gem” wine region only 30 minutes southeast of Napa. “Durif” is synonymous with Petite Sirah, and we added “Grand” to the name for this wine’s grand style. In addition, Chuck recently introduced Bonanza, a California Cabernet Sauvignon that reflects his spirit of discovery and celebrates good wine as a simple pleasure of life.

Today, Caymus remains family-run, and two of Chuck’s children, Charlie and Jenny Wagner, work alongside him. The family offers a range of wines sourced from premier winegrowing regions of California and beyond (for more information, go to wagnerfamilyofwine.com). Instilling his love of the land in his kids, Chuck remains a farmer at heart. He believes that at the end of the day, wine is meant to be shared with family and friends. And he marvels at his good fortune to be living in Napa Valley and working in the wine business.
