Nose

The 2015 puzzle has a distinct red currant and ripe plum fruit
character with the added complexity of wild herbs, nutmeg and
violets.

Palate

The palate is full bodied with a sturdy gravelly structure
supporting some deep red and black fruits, Dutch cocoa, plum
skins and rolled tobacco. The distinguishing feature of Spring
Mountain reflected in the wine is the wonderful texture and savory
complexity with provided great length and approachability.

Growing Conditions

Newton Vineyards Puzzle is an estate red blend from our Spring
Mountain vineyard based on the classic Bordeaux varieties and it
has been a hallmark of the winery for nearly 20 years. We have
experimented along the way with varieties, styles and techniques
in an effort to create a wine of unique personality and with great
drinkability.

The 2015 season was one of contrasts. The vintage was noted
by significantly reduced yields (-35-50%) a result of a cool and
damp flowering period in Spring which resulted in poor fruit
set and fewer berries per bunch. The Summer and Autumn were
hot and dry continuing the run of drought conditions which
commenced from the 2012 vintage. The quality of the fruit was
outstanding although in limited supply with the vintage likely to
be recognized as one of Napa Valley’s greatest. The 2015 Puzzle will cellar beautifully for 15-20 years where it
will evolve and develop greater complexity.

Harvest

Harvest date: September 8 - 24, 2015

Winemaking

The 2015 Puzzle is sourced exclusively from our Spring Mountain
Estate and is a blend of Bordeaux varietals sourced from 20
individual parcels of fruit. Once harvested, the grapes were
hand-sorted to inspect individual berries. The must was then
fermented in separate lots and barrel aged for 12 months before
being blended and returned to barrel for further maturation.
1099 cases produced.
