Growing Conditions
The Pillow Road vineyard is located in the Russian River Valley of Sonoma County southwest of the city of Sebastopol. Previously identified with Gravenstein apple orchards and counter-culture lifestyles, it is now known as a premium viticultural region renowned for producing world class Chardonnay. Famous for its Goldridge soils, large temperature swings and sweeping coastal fog, the vines at Pillow Road thrive in ideal climatic conditions allowing the grapes to develop to full maturity, producing exceptional wines that capture the best expression of this unique vineyard. The Pillow Road Chardonnay was planted in 2008. Composed of the Old Wente Clone, this low-yielding clone produces small clusters and berries with bright fruit tones, notable minerality and a profound elegance.
The Pillow Road Chardonnay was harvested during the night to preserve the fresh fruit characters. The grapes are hand sorted and gently whole cluster pressed to preserve the delicate aromas. The juice is cold settled for 24 hours and fermented in 50% new French oak barrels. After partial malolactic fermentation the wine is aged sur-lies for 11 months and stirred routinely to enhance a rich and complex palate.
