Nose
Notes of blackberries and blueberries jump from the glass.
Palate
The wine develops on the palate with big, velvety tannins and beautiful notes of coffee and dark blue and black fruit.
Growing Conditions
At just 25 acres, Beckstoffer’s Dr. Crane Vineyard is a tiny gem in St. Helena. Originally planted in 1858 and located next to an old riverbed, the soil is gravelly, loamy and well-drained. Benefitting from near perfect weather, the 2013 vintage is considered one of the highest quality vintages in Napa history. With a slightly warmer microclimate, the fruit from the Dr. Crane Vineyard is complex and concentrated.
Harvest
In the very early morning of September 28, our fruit was harvested and brought to the winery cold. After de-stemming, the clusters were transferred to stainless steel tanks for a 24-hour cold soak prior to the start of fermentation. The grapes fermented on the skins for 14 days before the wine was pressed and drained to barrel.
Aging
Using 90% new French oak from Darnajou and Taransaud coopers, the wine aged for 22 months before being bottled unfined and unfiltered, and cellared for 15 months.
