Flavors are similar, adding blood orange, watermelon, nectarine and cherry. Vibrant and lifted acidity, some minerality and a lingering, quenching mouthfeel.
A near perfect season, welcomed after several tense vintages, began with abundant February rains followed by drying sun and weather that allowed for even flowering and bud break. The slightly later start was followed by consistently ideal weather, with harvest beginning in mid-August. A slight rain in early October allowed for catch-up in the cellar as fruit was allowed to hang a bit longer, slow but steady until completion in early November. Generally normal to heavier fruit with great flavor and complexity will be the hallmark of the season.
As Santa Barbara County’s northernmost AVA, Santa Maria Valley is renowned for its unique funnel created by two transverse mountain ranges running east by west. Pinot Noir excels in this well-known valley that, despite its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, is uniquely situated just north of Point Conception, right where the climate is warm and mild enough to ripen grapes to full maturity. Less than twenty miles from the Pacific Ocean, North Canyon Vineyard sits along the Santa Maria river bench in a secluded canyon that provides some protection from the region’s renowned maritime influences. Located a bit off the direct valley, temperatures are often a few degrees warmer and North Canyon is exposed to extended periods of sunshine that ensure Pinot Noir matures to a bright red fruit character. A variety of rootstocks and clones are planted in calcareous clay sandstone at North Canyon, which differs from the valley’s defining marine mixture of ancient sea bed, clay loam and sand. North Canyon is farmed to exceptional sustainable standards, and is certified by SIP (Sustainability In Practice).

This distinctive wine was crafted primarily with Pinot Noir grapes that are grown specifically to showcase the attributes we desire in our Rose. Lovingly picked at night, the grapes are brought to the winery and gently whole cluster pressed while the fruit is still cool, being careful to have minimal skin contact. Fermentation is entirely in stainless fermenters. The wine does not go through malolactic fermentation, preserving crisp acidity and high toned delicate aromas.

A lovely rose gold trending toward salmon hue is distinctive in the glass.

A native of the Central Coast of California, Jon began his wine career when he returned home from college and joined the legendary Wine Cask Company in Santa Barbara. This became his finishing school for wine appreciation and where he began to refine his palate. Feeling a need to gain a more hands-on connection to the vineyard and winemaking, he joined Wild Horse Winery in 1989, where he worked his way up to winemaker in 1999. He then moved on to winemaking roles at Adelaida Cellars, Taz, and finally to Etude in 2005.
