Growing Conditions

The 2016 Amici Cellars Beckstoffer To Kalon Cabernet Sauvignon lives up to the storied reputation of To Kalon as one of the finest vineyards in the country. Originally planted in 1868 by Hamilton Crabb, this vineyard has produced some of the Napa Valley's best Cabernet Sauvignons, gaining legendary status as one of America’s first- growth vineyards. To Kalon sits on prime Oakville benchland where well-drained, gravelly soils combine with optimal sun exposure to yield rich flavors and impeccable fruit maturity.

2016 was another in a string of excellent vintages for Napa winemaking. Generous winter rains brought much-needed rainfall to saturate the root zones and replenish reservoirs. Moderate temperatures and bright sunshine enabled the vines to thrive throughout the spring and summer, creating a balanced, optimal growing pace. Warm days and cool nights during harvest season allowed ripening to progress at an even pace, resulting in wines that display complex fruit flavors and balanced acidity.

Winemaking

The power of this heritage vineyard lies in its distinct nose with classic To Kalon aromas of clay loam, wet earth and mint. Additional elevated aromatics feature blueberry jam, rhubarb compote, cassis and sweet tobacco. On the palate, the wine is both precise and dense, with soy, menthol, raspberry cordial and black raspberry jam notes. A powerful wine from start to finish, with powdery, chalky tannins and an impressively long finish.

Aging
