Growing Conditions

Tucked away in the far eastern corner of Santa Barbara’s famed Santa Maria Bench is the Nielson Pinot Blanc Vineyard. This east-west running “transverse range” provides an unusually cool mesoclimate, as marine air from the Pacific Ocean only 14 miles away is funneled directly into the region.

Elevation: 350 – 450 feet

Soil: This is a south facing block with a slight slope towards the Santa Maria Valley bench made up of Botella loam soils.

Climate: A direct infusion of daily fog and moderate temperatures combine for an extremely long growing season.

Harvest

The vines are planted on soils that formed in alluvial material from marine sediments. The combination of these elements delivers a superb locale for the cultivation of Pinot Blanc.

Aging

Aged 10 months in 58% French oak; 42% new American oak.
