A brief history

Family owned since its founding in 1961, Heitz Cellar’s legacy runs as deep as the roots throughout the Napa Valley; a winery legend that has helped shape the history of Napa Valley winemaking. In the late 1950’s, pioneering vintner Joe Heitz ushered in Napa’s modern era with his iconic, globally celebrated wines, including Napa Valley’s first vineyard-designated Cabernet Sauvignon, the renowned Heitz Cellar Martha’s Vineyard. Fifty-eight years of the Heitz family’s dedication to viticulture, stewardship, and classic winemaking, maintained the winery’s notoriety as a benchmark amongst its peers in California and Europe.

In April, 2018, Heitz Cellar entered an exciting new chapter as this rich legacy was passed into the hands of the Lawrence family, whose deep roots in agriculture and commitment to the same core values of fine winemaking made it a perfect match. The wines are made with an unwavering commitment to quality from organically farmed, 100% Napa Valley fruit, and a commitment to the sustainability of Napa Valley.

Heitz Cellar Quartz Creek Chardonnay Bottle Preview
Heitz CellarQuartz Creek Chardonnay

Our 2018 Quartz Creek Chardonnay is the most refined Chardonnay we have ever crafted; notes of sea salt, Meyer lemon, tangerine zest, orange blossom, and wet stone are all supported by the tension and weight of pristine Chardonnay grown over a bed of Quartz rock. The brilliant acidity from early harvesting is balanced by the fullness that can only be achieved with 14 months of lees aging. A lower percentage of new oak, hovering around 10%, gives a lift to the wine while the 90% that was aged in neutral French oak ovals providing freshness and length. We are thrilled to introduce this exquisite wine as this vineyard’s inaugural release and to reintroduce Heitz Cellar as a grower of age-worthy, classically driven Chardonnay.

Heitz CellarLot C-91 Cabernet Sauvignon

Aged for nine months in large neutral casks and a combination of new and used French oak, the 2016 Lot C-91 exhibits the density and length of which only the truly great wines of the world are able to achieve. The presence of savory elements such as sage, rosemary, cured meats, and black pepper distinguishes this cuvée from any other. The conclusion of Lot C-91 on the palate displays incredible complexity and harmony, and those who can afford to be patient will be rewarded for decades to come.

The 2015 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon immediately entices with notes of black cherry, sweet plum, fresh raspberries, currants, anise, and clove. These notes are complemented by savory elements, reminiscent of sweet tobacco and new leather. The mouthfeel on this wine has gentle power. It is light and bright with fresh acidity yet there is weight and length that extends long after the first sip of wine. The structure is balanced with soft and developed tannins, only achieved by allowing this wine to age for two full years in barrel and a full year in bottle before release.

Located at the base of the Mayacamas mountains, Martha’s Vineyard’s gradual slope to the valley floor provides us with exquisite well-drained soil. The small yield in 2015 resulted in a wine of exceptional concentration in aromatics and structure that attests to the pedigree and acclaim for which this vineyard is renowned. We are honored to release another stunning vintage from one of the most prized vineyards in the Napa Valley.
