Groth Vineyards & WineryVerified Organization

A brief history

It was 1981 when Atari executive Dennis Groth and his wife, Judy, purchased a 121-acre vineyard property in Oakville. The vineyard needed work, but when the couple crushed their first grapes in 1982, the Cabernet Sauvignon it produced was exceptional. Committed to their vision, they designed the Groth label to include an image of their mission-style winery long before it was actually constructed. But by the time Robert Parker gave the Groth 1985 Reserve Cabernet 100 points — the first U.S. wine to earn that distinction — Groth was firmly on the map. Today, under the leadership of Dennis and Judy’s daughter, Suzanne Groth, the family winery and estates are flourishing. A decades-long plan to replant their estate vineyards is under way, an endeavor that ensures the continuity of estate wines and has led to the first new wines to join the Groth portfolio in decades.

Prior to that he was Winemaker at Jarvis Estate, where he worked closely with renowned winemaking consultant Dmitri Tchelistcheff and earned a reputation for crafting beautifully balanced, vineyard-driven wines. Ted shares the Groth family’s philosophy that the greatness of our wines is born in our vineyard estates and those of our esteemed grower partners. His passion for single-vineyard and estate wines and his knowledge of organic farming and how it improves wine quality will help further Groth’s mission of continually improving our unique wines of place through incremental advancements in farming and winemaking.
