a plethora of vibrant aromas
voluptuous at mid-palate, with impeccable balance and an exceptionally long finish.
A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot, the grapes for “Cariad” hail from ancient riverbeds turned hillsides overlooking the heart of Napa Valley. Named for the Welsh word for love, “Cariad’s” opulence and structure are characterized by exotic notes of violet, dark fruit, and a gravelly minerality. We say that “Cariad” is a sphere which is purple.
From 1992 to 2007, we were fortunate to source fruit from the hallowed Herb Lamb vineyard, a north facing site located on the lower slopes of Howell Mountain. We diligently selected only the top seven rows to vinify for the Colgin “Herb Lamb” bottling. The wine from “Herb Lamb” vineyard is consistently about charm and perfume, with notes of blue fruits and mint.
Our “IX Estate” is a powerful blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. “IX Estate” is a wine of great power with towering aromatics of dark fruits, savory herbs, and spice. First produced in 2002, “IX Estate” can be enjoyed in youth and ages gracefully for years to come.
A singular expression of Cabernet Sauvignon that hails from a historic jewel box vineyard; “Tychson Hill,” named after Josephine Tychson, was the first of two vineyards purchased by Colgin in the 1990’s. Ideally situated on the foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains, just north of St. Helena, and containing some of the rarest volcanic soil found in the Napa Valley, “Tychson Hill” has long been celebrated for its ethereal qualities, as well as floral notes and red fruit distinguishable in every vintage.
A lifelong love of wines from the Northern Rhone inspired the decision to plant clones from Cote-Rotie and Hermitage in the rocky, volcanic soil “IX Estate.” The resulting wine is one of uncommon merit, with nuances of blackberry, acacia, wild herbs, and smoked meats. “IX Estate” Syrah is often regarded as “one of the most unique Syrah’s being made in California today.”
